The wind gets up on the 7th. You are standing over the ball, one hand leaves the club to press your skirt against your thigh, then returns to the grip. You would rather be concentrating on the shot.
A golf skort is a skirt with shorts sewn inside, on the same waistband. The word is a contraction of skirt and shorts, and it names exactly that one garment.
A golf skirt with built-in shorts
The distinction is small and it is the whole point. The two layers are joined: the shorts are fixed to the waistband, on the inside, and they do not move relative to the skirt.
Shorts or leggings slipped underneath can work too. But the two pieces stay independent: a waistband that rotates, a seam that rubs, and you have to readjust them between shots.
The inner short is short and close to the body. It is not there to be seen, it is there so that you have nothing left to keep an eye on.
The right model disappears in movement. When you try one on, walk, turn and bend down without putting the skirt or the shorts back in place.
What it settles: the wind, and how often you bend down
On an exposed course, nothing breaks the air. On the day it blows, the built-in shorts give you cover that stays put even when the skirt fabric lifts.
The second point comes back on every hole. Count the movements in a round: putting a tee in the ground, picking it up, marking your ball, lifting it, replacing it, reading a putt from a crouch. Then it starts again on the next hole. Without the shorts underneath, each of those asks for half a second of attention that has no business being there.
A skort keeps the look of a skirt and brings the ease of shorts. Both count when you are choosing one.
The marker is what you feel: covered, comfortable, free to play.
Length: what is done, and what to look at
There is no single length that suits everyone. Look at where the skirt falls on you: it has to let you walk and bend comfortably, with an inner short that stays where it should.
Clubs do not all use the same reference points. Some name the skirt among the accepted pieces, alongside trousers and shorts, then specify a length or rule out a mini skirt. Others simply ask for correct dress. Before a first visit, look at the course’s guidance: the length as worn counts for more than the name the shop gave the garment.
The word skort does not always appear in those rules. Built-in shorts bring comfort, but they do not exempt you from the length asked of a skirt. If the wording leaves you in doubt, the office can answer before you tee off.
Two tests beat one measurement. Crouch all the way down, as if reading a line: if the inner short rides up there, it will ride up outside. Then walk twenty paces and see whether the short shows. You try it moving, never standing still in front of a mirror.
Slide a finger under the waistband: it is the waistband that holds two layers at once, and it is the waistband that marks the skin when it is rigid.

The Dogleg golf skort, women and girls
Here the piece exists at two scales: the women’s Skort, XS to 2XL, and the girls’ Skort, 6 to 14. Same fabric: 93 % polyester and 7 % elastane. Built-in inner short on both, elasticated waistband on the girls’ model. The elastane is what makes it come back into shape after a crouch instead of staying stretched across the thigh.
